3 Big Reasons It May Not Be Time For Preschool

Posted on

Preschool can be an important building block in a successful education experience for your child. But, just when is it time for your child to get started with their education? If you are having a difficult time determining if your youngster is ready for preschool, there are a few things that you must consider.

How ready are you for your child to start going to school?

It can be incredibly difficult for a parent to watch their little one start school at any age, but if you have severe anxiety over allowing your child to go to preschool, it may be a sign that you should give it some time. The more prepared you are to see your child off to school, the less traumatic it will be for your child to be separated from you, because your child will often sense your own distress and mirror your attitude.

What are the requirements of local preschool programs when it comes to child behavior?

Every preschool has its own set of guidelines when it comes to what children can be accepted to a program. For example, some preschool administrators may require that your child:

In addition to checking with the local preschool to find out what their requirements are, you should be looking at your child's overall behavior. If you still have a rowdy and rambunctious child on your hands that listens more like a toddler than a young child, school may not be the best idea just yet.

How self-reliant is your child?

When you get your little one up in the morning, are you forcing them to get dressed, brush their hair, or sit down and eat their breakfast cereal? Can your little one do some things on his or her own without your constant guidance or supervision? If your child still heavily relies on you to do even the most simple tasks, preschool may not be the right thing at the moment. At school, your child will have to be more self-reliant, as teachers and caregivers in the classroom will be in charge of handling several children at one time.

Preschool programs start accepting children usually as young as three and four-years-old. Yet, not all children develop at the same rate and preschool is still an optional education choice. Talk to a preschool program director, such as at Freedom Academy, if you are unsure of whether your child is ready for a preschool program.
